Under the motto “
You are capable of more than you think”, Grade 9 students at accadis International School Bad Homburg take on the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (DofE Award) – one of the world’s most prestigious youth achievement programs. It encourages them to push their limits, gain new experiences, and take on social responsibility.
An Internationally Renowned Program
Founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the award encourages young people aged 14 to 24 in over 130 countries. Participants engage in four areas:
- Voluntary Service – Social or environmental projects foster a sense of responsibility.
- Skills – Whether music, languages, or crafts, new talents are discovered and developed.
- Physical Recreation – Physical challenges improve fitness and promote a healthy lifestyle.
- Adventurous Journey – In teams, young people complete hikes or canoe trips, learning to overcome challenges together.
Depending on their age and experience, participants can complete the award at three levels: Bronze (14+ years), Silver (15+ years), and Gold (16+ years).
Why the DofE Award is Valuable
The award enhances personal and social skills and is highly regarded in university applications and future career opportunities. Participants develop essential soft skills such as teamwork, self-confidence, and perseverance. Many international schools, particularly IB schools, integrate the program into their extracurricular activities. accadis ISB goes one step further by embedding the program into its Ethics curriculum.
