On 20 and 21 May, the accadis Club of Theatre (aCT) wowed the audience with Oscar Wilde’s comedy “The Importance of Being Earnest”.
After a three-year break, the aCT was excited to perform again and all members of the group were hard at work rehearsing. Finally, last week, the play was staged in two sold-out sessions.
A trivial comedy for serious people
The Irish dramatist, novelist and poet is known for his criticism of Victorian society and its standards. The comedy “The Importance of Being Earnest” is one of Wilde’s most significant plays and impresses with its satirical and humorous portrayal of the British upper class.
Students turn into make-up artists and sound technicians
The students took on the roles of light and sound technicians and of make-up artists. They all did an excellent job and grew into their responsibilities. They mastered the tasks both during dress rehearsal and the actual performances. The audience was thrilled by the fancy hairstyles and unexpected lighting effects on show.
Breathtaking stage design and inspired costumes
Head of Art Stalina Arnold painted the stage design together with two students. “I like to let my creativity flow freely when creating the sets. I greatly enjoy the process of building something amazing with the students.”
The inventive costumes by Secondary School teacher Dr. Tamara Haddad delighted the audience. Taking on the responsibility of producer and wardrobe manager, she was supported by two students as well.
Acting in the afternoon
The accadis Club of Theater is part of the accadis ISB co-curricular program and open to students from the Secondary School, who would like to perform on stage or work behind the scenes. Run by Secondary School teachers Daniel Elliott and Dr. Tamara Haddad, the course members meet once a week.
With up to 20 roles to fill, an assistant director, two production assistants, a sound and light technician and six hair and make-up artists, each one of the 30 students participating in the play had their own responsibilities.
All-round successful performances and great teamwork!
